more » « less

We go from Turoa carpark to Girdlestone region then down to Mangaehuehu Hut (18) for Saturday night. On Sunday we go cross country to carpark. Suggest we avoid the ski field to get a back country atmosphere. Our times depend on snow conditions. Escape plan is to go lower.

Easy-medium: Skill needed: self-arrest. Traverse at 1700m-2000m to SE Ridge of Girdlestone for the view. Then down to the hut. Expect not much height gain, snowy slopes, and a chance to plan your way across untracked slopes, or follow others. 6 + 4 hrs.

Leader: Sue Grant, ph 846 5821

Medium-Fit: One snow ascent of a North Island peak is enough experience. As for easy party, then ascend enough for a medium trip, then down to hut. Work towards a Girdlestone circuit. 9 + 4 hrs.

Leader: Terry Chubb, ph 940 7453

Transport: Club bus

Destination: Turoa carpark, Ruapehu
